David Green OBE, FRSA FiE
Chief Executive, UKBCSE
David is Chief Executive of the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy (UKBCSE) that he created in 2002, building on his past work as the Director of the Combined Heat and Power Association.
He was appointed by the Mayor of London to Chair the London Energy Partnership. He is a member of the UK Government delegations to the World Summit on Sustainable Development and in 2004 took part in the International Conference on Renewable Energy. He was a Commissioner for the LGA Climate Change Commission, which released its final report in December 2007. He is also a member of the high level Ministerial Advisory Group on Sustainable Communities. David Green was awarded the MBE in 1986 and the OBE in 2003.
James Smith
Chairman, Shell UK
James is the Chairman of Shell UK. He has been with Shell since 1983 and has worked in all the Group’s major businesses. Until the end of 2003 he was on the global board of Shell Chemicals as head of technology, strategy and sustainable development. He has also been head of resourcing, which principally involved ensuring there is a highly talented and diverse group of leaders for the top 200 jobs in Shell.
Much of James’ early career was in upstream oil and gas production, latterly in business development. He has been extensively involved in Shell business in a number of Middle Eastern countries and in the US. In addition, he was MD of Shell’s downstream business in Brunei and chaired Shell’s global catalyst business during a period of restructuring for profitability. James has a degree in physics and is a chartered accountant. Before joining Shell he worked with Accenture.
John French
Head of Policy, UKBCSE
The Council brings together the Chief Executives of the major energy companies
in the UK to develop an effective dialogue with Government that can help strengthen
the UK's strategic agenda for sustainable energy and accelerate the move towards
a competitive, low-carbon economy. Prior to joining the Council, John was
Network Director at the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership
(REEEP) in Vienna, and previously served as a Policy Advisor on Climate Change
and Energy at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Councillor Steve Smith
Executive Member for Environmental Services, Leeds City Council
Steve Smith has been a Councillor for Rothwell since 2003. In 2005 he became responsible for City Services and shortly afterwards for Environmental Services.
Outside politics Steve has been a bank manager for Midland Bank (1974 - 1998) and more recently has carried out consultancy work in both the charity and commercial sectors. He carried out a a secondment working at Save the Children for a year and was a non-executive director at South Leeds NHS Primary Care Trust. He has been an adviser for the Prince’s Trust and a director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse Theatre in Leeds and also of Groundwork Leeds.
Richard Lee
Programme Director, Future Energy Yorkshire
Richard has over 15 years experience in medium scale energy and utility plant ranging from operations and maintenance through plant design, project management and commissioning. Richard has undertaken numerous feasibility studies for combined heat and power, biomass and other renewables projects and has also worked in industry regulation and on carbon emission reduction programmes in the public sector. Richard joined FEY in May 2006 and is responsible for the overall direction of FEY’s operations. Richard also directly manages a number of projects including activities in clean coal technology, grid connection and distributed generation.
Liz Gray
Area Manager, WhizzGo Europe Limited
Liz joined the WhizzGo car club at its inception in 2004. Since then, she has been working with councils, organisations, developers and members of the public to help pay-by-the-hour cars become an intrinsic part of city centre transport options in 12 cities of the UK. Providing a cost effective and environmental alternative to private cars, a grey fleet or pool cars, car clubs fit squarely into the smarter choices agenda and are helping to lower the carbon footprint of organisations across the UK, while saving them money.
As an area manager at WhizzGo, Liz is responsible for business development and the expansion of WhizzGo. Liz is motivated by the environmental benefits provided, and is also responsible for lowering emissions across WhizzGo, ensuring that the WhizzGo fleet is using technology to run an energy efficient fleet, and for making WhizzGo carbon negative across the company’s operations.
Ben Wielgus
Advisor Risk & Sustainability, KPMG
Since joining KPMG’s Sustainability Advisory Services team in London, Ben has worked to help his clients understand and address the risks and opportunities presented by the sustainability agenda. Originally focussed on CSR assurance this work included major extractors such as Anglo America and Shell Nigeria.
When KPMG established a cross-discipline Carbon Advisory Group in 2007 Ben took the opportunity to return to his native North of England to help organisations in the region understand this agenda. He has written articles and commented for local and national press on issues such as carbon footprinting, sustainable procurement and the role of sustainability in business. Currently Ben is KPMG’s national lead in supporting the firm’s public and private sector clients in understanding and addressing the issues raised by the upcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment. Ben also works with KPMG’s internal CSR teams to help improve the impact of the business on the communities and environment within which it operates.
Tom Cumberlege
Public Sector Manager, Carbon Trust
Tom Cumberlege works in the Public Sector Carbon Management team at the Carbon Trust. He manages the Local Authority Carbon Management Programme. Prior to this role he was responsible for the design, delivery and management of the NHS and Higher Education Carbon Management Programmes. The programmes provide technical and change management support to help organisations reduce their carbon emissions and capture cost savings. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust in May 2006, Tom worked in financial services for 5 years and before this taught English in Japan for 2 years. He studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and graduated with a BA Hons in International Politics and International History.
George Munson
Climate Change Officer, Sustainable Development Unit, Leeds City Council
George Munson has been employed as the Climate Change Officer for Leeds City Council since 2006. The role involves both advising on climate change policy across the city council and working with private, voluntary and public sector organisations across Leeds to develop a climate change strategy and action plan for the city. This is due for publication early in 2009.
Prior to joining Leeds he worked jointly as Climate Change Coordinator for
GOYH and Yorkshire Forward between 2004-06, where he led the development and
delivery of the first regional climate change action plan to cover both climate
adaptation and mitigation and worked with the DTi to establish an innovative
£10m fuel poverty alleviation programme. Since graduating from the University
of Sheffield in 1998, he has also managed an Energy Efficiency Advice Centre
for the Energy Saving Trust, led a domestic energy efficiency programme for
a London Borough, provided business advice on behalf of ETSU and completed
an MSc in Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
