Sustainable UK Cities: Moving to a Low Carbon Economy
The UK is on the cusp of adopting a legally binding target to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2050. Cities will have a vital role to play in delivering this goal.
In its recent report, the Local Government Association's Climate Change Commission found, "that Councils in the UK can help cut carbon emissions by 150 million tonnes of CO2 a year.” This will require the combined efforts of local authorities, businesses and the wider community.
For those companies that seize the commercial opportunity created by climate change, there is a significant prize. Independent economic research commissioned by Shell shows the UK market for climate change related business could be around £30 billion over the next ten years.
To develop the practical action needed, the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy supported by Shell is bringing together business leaders, local government, and the community to help identify emerging priorities to tackle climate change, and explore the partnership opportunities that will be needed to deliver the necessary change.
Over the coming year, we are visiting key cities around the UK that can help facilitate the move towards a low carbon economy: Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.
“The Government recognises
that local and regional bodies play a very important part in tacking climate
change. They are ideally placed to show leadership and to work in partnership
with others to deliver change in their areas. I am therefore very encouraged
by the work the UK business Council for Sustainable Energy and Shell are taking
forward to promote active partnerships between cities and the private sector
to help deliver a low carbon future. I wish you every success.”
Joan Ruddock, Minister for Climate Change, Biodiversity and Waste
